Resource Description Framework (RDF)

RDF Vocabularies! How important are they?

Answer??? They are Very important…and Not as important as we make them out to be.

• They are the primary tool to allow for a machine readable description of the data
• Not as important as we make them to be??? Why not?
  • They are a data tool
  • Therefore so long as we know what the vocabulary means we can easily translate from one vocabulary to another.

Challenge of moving from MARC to RDF

• BIBFRAME RDF Vocabulary
• MARC Records
• Reference Data stored in multiple tables with fixed usages
• Converting that data to RDF
• Legacy concepts during transfer

Combining multiple uses into one source object

In relational databases important concepts/resources have been replicated/duplicated across multiple tables

De-duplication of that data back to a single resource

Why???

• Relational database design ≠ RDF/Graph Database design
• RDF/Graph Databases are RELATIONAL
